The only openings are on the two rows of offset filtering louvers on the vertical face of the panels.  With no moving parts to wear out or need replacing; unless damaged by falling tree branches or other acts  that we have no control over is dependable. Because there are no openings to the vertical, gravity is our friend and does not work against us. Surface adhesion causes the rain to adhere to the curved nose of the panel redirecting the rain from a mostly horizontal plane on top of the panel, to a vertical plane on the face of the panel where the curved louvers draw the rain into the gutter, even in the hardest rain; while at the same time rejecting leaves, pine needles and other debris. Each time it rains hard the heavy flow of rain continuously washes the inside of your gutters. This is the self-cleaning action you will appreciate for years of virtually self-cleaning gutter protection. With no openings on top of the panels, ("open to the vertical"), we eliminate the problem of gravity working against us 24/7 as it does with competiting products that have openings above the gutter. Be it the simple screens or the more complex covers with openings on top, gravity will win that battle over time.                   The offset filtering louvers on the vertical face of the panels prevent leaves, pine needles, etc. from falling or blowing into the gutters when it's not raining or washing into the gutters when it is raining.
Made of aluminum or copper the  panels will never rust, no moving parts to wear out or replace, what more could you ask for, sounds dependable to me.
